Lake Saka in Kibale is situated in Kabarole district, western region of Uganda. The estimate terrain elevation above sea level is 1591 meters. Lake Saka Kibale is a large inland body of standing water. The main common activities carried out include; boating, canoe riding as well as Bird watching.
Lake Saka is the largest lake in the immediate vicinity of Fort Portal and one of the most attractive. Not strictly speaking a crater lake, Lake Saka is one of the few lakes that supports fishing for commercial harvesting.
Saka is safe to swim in. The lake lies on a church land, so no tourist facility and vague plans to build a campsite on the lake shores have been shelved. Cycling tours around this area can be arranged by a local tour operator in Uganda and these go past the lake area into Kibale Forest National Park.
Activities Around the Lake
It is also possible to take a guided nature walk around Lake Saka to Amabeere Caves in a couple of hours. This follows a path running to the right fork that goes downhill to form a river and leads to the Saka road near Kagote prison.
The lake can be approached directly from Fort Portal. From the town centre, follow Lugard road towards Mountains of the Moon Hotel for a bout 1km, then immediately after passing the golf course, turn left to Saka Road. Lake Saka Kibale is about 7km out of town, following the two adjoining craters. The best way is to have private transport, but be prepared to walk via Kaitabagoro crater lake. This follows a 1km track that runs north from Saka road opposite Kagote prison.
Apart from visiting Lake Saka, one can choose to do a chimpanzee tour in Kibale Forest, one of the most popular chimpanzee trekking activities in Uganda. Most of the times, visitors to Kibale Forests National Park compliment their visit with a visit to Bwindi Forest National Park for a life time gorilla trekking tour for an opportunity to encounter the might Mountain Gorillas
