Lake Nkuruba is a very good crater lake located just 25 km south of the great town of Fort Portal in western Uganda. Situated in the stunning landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountains and Kibale Forest National Park, this ancient crater lake and the nearby nature reserve support a variety of wildlife, even though this has been uniquely unaffected by deforestation.
The guests of the reserve get to enjoy great close encounters with four species of native primates. The most significant among these are a troop of the endangered Uganda red colobus monkeys. More so, these rare and very remarkable animals, our guests share the company of beautiful black and white colobus, vervet as well as red tailed monkeys.
Bird lovers will find the reserve and its green forest a haven for many species including the great blue Turaco and the black and white casqued Hornbill. The visitors to the site will commonly enjoy sightseeing of the banded mongoose and the squirrels; at the same time some may be lucky enough to catch a glance of our resident but elusive cobra!
The main accommodation facilities around Lake Nkuruba include; Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve Community Campsite. This is one of the best valued places around and it’s set on a forested lake that is remarkably perfect for nature experience. The hilltop camp sports with great views and easy lake access. There are also some bandas that are thatched roofed huts which are basic, but clean and comfortable. This cottage is down on the lake shore for more privacy.
The most common animals found here include the monkeys, and the bush babies, and many bird species. Lake Nkuruba has different species of birds recorded
