Lake Mutusi is one of the many crater lakes that are found in Kabarole District, near Fort Portal. This and many others attract tourists all year round, who come to bask in the beauty they present.
Kabarole District, located in western Uganda, is endowed with more than 50 crater lakes and 10 rivers making it the only single district in the world that host such numerous water bodies. With such endowments, the district has attracted many tourists from different parts of the world.
In over 10000 years ago, Kabarole District had a lot of volcanic activity within this area, leading to the formation of the Mutusi crater lake. This also explains why pozzolana, the mineral used in manufacturing cement, has high deposits in Fort Portal- Kabarole District.
Craters are flat floor depressions, formed when explosions and eruptions of gases blow off the rocks at the surface, leaving a shallow circular depression. These depressions are at times filled with rainwater thus forming Mutusi crater lake and other typical examples found in Kasese, Kabarole, Bushenyi, Kisoro, and Rubirizi districts.
Mutusi crater is surrounded with many numerous rivers, lakes and swamps, because it is found within the Albertine Rift Valley region. These attract flora and fauna in the region, that is ranked the highest in bio-diversity, in Africa, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
